Lead Research Organisation: Cardiff University
Department Name: Cardiff School of Planning and Geography

Abstract

This project examines the prevention of homelessness amongst young people in cities of the Global South, contributing to the emerging global agenda to eradicate homelessness. In the Global South, considerable attention has been given to informal settlements but little academic evidence is available on the most extreme forms of youth homelessness. In the Global North a systemic focus on homelessness prevention is emerging. This study will critically appraise the housing pathways framework, it recognises the interplay between structural and individual factors and will have significant potential in understanding hitherto under-explored homeless experiences in the Global South. Given the struggles to access housing in the city, it will be informed by the Right to the City concept - focusing on principles of collective rights to appropriate space.
