Quantum gases in an optical Kagome lattice

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

I am joining an existing team in the construction of an optical Kagome lattice experiment for quantum gases of ultracold alkali atoms. Such a set-up is known as a quantum simulator, as it can replicate the behaviour of condensed matter systems or other arbitrary Hamiltonians in a highly controlled environment. The Kagome lattice displays remarkable features such as a flat band and geometric frustration in the case of antiferromagnetic interactions, which give rise to novel phenomena and also provide a platform for the study of non-equilibrium physics.
