Literacy levels and women's empowerment

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Linguistics

Abstract

From my undergraduate studies, my main interests are in the links between nutrition education/healthcare and literacy,
specifically for women from low-income backgrounds. My undergraduate research project is a systematic review of
randomised controlled trials, and this is a method of research that I have found challenging, yet rewarding. Broadly, I
would like to investigate links between women's empowerment and literacy levels. I would be interested in looking into
how this impacts actual or perceived access to healthcare, especially in low-income countries/regions. The disparities
between actual access and perceived access, as a result of an individual's language and literacy competency are some
that I would be incredibly interested to investigate further. However, I also have a keen interest in gender equality, in
specific regard to literacy abilities of young children. Therefore, I would be interested in research around language
acquisition of young children, and the language-related environmental factors as to why they may experience genderbased inequalities later in childhood. Further to this, consideration of multi-lingual abilities in this research would be of
interest to me.
