Agrippa (A Book Of The Dead) and the Boundaries of the Book in A Digital Age

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: English

Abstract

I am applying to an Art & Humanities Research Council Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership,
supervised by Dr Jason Scott-Warren, in the English Faculty, at the University of Cambridge, and by Dr Christopher
Fletcher, Keeper of the Special Collections of the Bodleian Libraries, at the University of Oxford. My PhD research will be
on ephemeral materials in the Bodleian Libraries collections, starting with a case study on an artist's book that wants to
self-destruct: Agrippa (A Book of The Dead) published in 1992. I will research how much of the author's intent we keep in
our preservation and conservation procedures when we work to provide a perennial access to collections. My research
will be based on my expertise as a conservator, currently working at the Bodleian Libraries, and my academic
background in Humanities with both a Master's Degree in Conservation of Cultural Heritage Artefacts and History of
Religion and Culture in Society. I will explore practical preventive solutions that can be provided to respect the intellectual
property and material integrity of an artefact. I shall compare the procedures of the Bodleian Libraries with other
institutions, especially with Cambridge University Library. I will discuss questions of library access and general issues of
preservation in institutional and private collections to deliver preventive procedures for ephemera. I shall present my work
to professional conferences and to the general public.
