Exploring the causal linkages between social and environmental outcomes in landscape-scale agri-environment delivery

Abstract
The PhD will be undertaken during a period of significant change for farmers across the UK. The Agriculture Bill 2018 will alter the current systems of financial support and includes clear plans to reward farmers for pro-environmental behaviour such as improving air and water quality (UK Government, 2018). Undertaking research at this time is therefore a prime opportunity to understand the place and influence of collaborative agri-environmental schemes (AES) in this new policy and the post-Brexit agricultural landscape.

| Description | A greater understanding of the social processes within Countryside Stewardship Facilitation Fund groups, farmer groups which aim to improve the environment at a landscape-scale in England. The PhD highlights the importance of creating strong social relationships to encourage change, and explores the processes through which this happens in the groups. It also identifies the barriers to uptake of collaborative land management approaches. |
| Exploitation Route | I have discussed my current findings with the head of the Countryside Stewardship Facilitation Fund in Natural England. We have regular catch ups to discuss how to address the barriers I have discovered and also to consider how the positive elements of the scheme can be implemented in the new agri-environment schemes the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs are currently developing. |

| Results and Impact | The Brilliant Club charity works with the PhD community to support students from less advantaged backgrounds to access and succeed at the most competitive higher education institutions. I have delivered courses in four schools across Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. The course was titled: 'Why farming matters: the importance of agri-environment schemes in England' and it was based on the research I am completing. |
