Awake in Deep Sleep: The case of lucid dreamless sleep

Abstract

In the study of consciousness, one of the key objectives is to find out what is the subjective character of conscious experience. What is it like for an individual to be conscious? While we might think that to be conscious we need to be aware of something, there exist some cases that challenge this assumption. Lucid dreamless sleep (LDS), the experience of awareness during sleep in the absence of dreams has recently gained popularity in the quest to find an experience of 'pure' or 'raw' awareness. My research investigates LDS by uncovering new data on contentless conscious experiences.
