Women's Aid as an international endeavour, 1971-1993.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: College of Arts

Abstract

This project explores the transnational dimensions of the emergence and practice of Women's Aid in Britain. The founding of Women's Aid as a response to domestic violence through the provision of advice and shelters, has hitherto been explored only as a national endeavour but the movement was informed by international conversations as well as local responses to need. By investigating the ideologies and practices of activists and the experiences of service-users, this project will position the Women's Aid movement in Britain within a transnational context and identify the saliency of race to an understanding of this important feminist project.
