A novel approach to zero emission combustion for ultra-high efficiency internal combustion engines

Abstract

Zero emissions can be achieved in an engine if the in-cylinder conditions are precisely controlled. Homogenous compression ignition has been demonstrated by other researchers but at limited operating conditions and with poor repeatability. The previous work used the 'black box' approach with little or no consideration of the fundamentals of the combustion process. This project aims at developing a fundamental approach to 'engineering' the in-cylinder conditions to achieve homogenous lean zero emission combustion. The use of charge compression temperature control using isothermal processes and high turbulence to control mixing and combustion mode will be investigated. Chemical kinetic and CFD modelling, validated and informed by existing experimental results will be used for this work.
