Multi-messenger astrophysics with the Gravitational wave Optical Transient Observer

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The era of multi-messenger is upon us, thanks to regular gravitational wave detections, as well as exciting developments in high-energy sources, including neutrinos. The project will involve exploiting the Gravitational wave Optical Transient Observer (GOTO) facility, which is a dedicated survey facility for electromagnetic counterparts. The facility is expected to significantly scale in capability during the studentship. The work will initially focus on contributing to key improvements on the data analysis side to ensure that data can be mined in near real time. The student will also be involved in follow-up programs that classify and characterise sources using other facilities. During LVC science runs, the work will focus on GW searches, with a particular focus on neutron star events, while secondary science and other messengers will come into play during the gaps in between those runs.
