In vitro Investigation Assessing Erosive and Abrasive Toothwear Challenges on Natural Human Enamel

Lead Research Organisation: King's College London
Department Name: Dental Institute

Abstract

Given that the history of the literature for tooth wear has been around polished enamel and now with the advices in the methods in analysing non uniform curved surfaces can we investigate the interplay of erosion and abrasion on natural enamel along with this explore the remineralising and protective agents available with consideration to their modifications.

To start with - Assess abrasion parameters and their impact on erosive tooth wear for polished enamel - given the majority of the research has previously focused on polished enamel can I reproduce some of the results to enhance my experimental ability
Following this compare abrasion parameters on the impact of erosive tooth wear on natural enamel

Methodology will see the exploration of both erosion, abrasion and erosion and abrasion to start with and use synthetic saliva
Samples will be prepared by sectioning - embedding - polishing - sample to confirm flatness - erosive/abrasive challenges - analysis

the analysis to start with will be assent of step height sessions via a profilometer
we will also look to explore micro hardness and other analytic methods

the above methodology will be for study 1 in the thesis
Study 2 has moved to natural curved surfaces
further studies are now both exploring the uses of silicone to take the wear model to a possible clinical trial as well as exploring the use of agents such as fluoride to determine use for wear prevention
