How does specialist dementia nursing work? A mixed methods study of UK Admiral Nursing

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Division of Psychiatry

Abstract

Around 46.8 million people worldwide have dementia, and this is expected to increase to 131.5 million by 2050 (1). Most people with dementia want to continue living in their own homes as independently as possible. Family carer wellbeing and support is critical to enabling this. The most widely adopted model of specialist dementia nursing in the UK (Admiral Nursing) aims to deliver relational care, with an emphasis on providing family carers with expert emotional support, guidance and care coordination. This studentship would bring together Dementia UK, the third sector organisation that supports the professional and practice development of all Admiral Nurses, with national and international academic and clinical academic expertise (through the UCL Alzheimer's Society Centre of Excellence and City University School of Nursing).
