Untangling AI: An interdisciplinary approach to understanding artists' use of Artificial Intelligence through installation, archival research...

Abstract

...documentary film and experimental making.

Discourse around Artificial Intelligence (AI) is too often framed through a narrow binary
of utopian vs dystopian futures. Art practitioners do not escape this limited paradigm.
Drawing on actor-network theory and media archaeological approaches this project
treats AI instead as a network of interacting social, cultural, creative and technical
agencies. Outcomes from documentary analysis will become the source data and
analytical material for art installations using different media to contextualise and critique
AI objects within their networks of production. The project will make new connections
between installation art and humanities/social science scholarship on AI and its futures.
