Exploring spiritual needs and the use of a measure of spiritual well-being with people with BAME heritage living with a terminal illness

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Division of Psychiatry

Abstract

I will be undertaking a qualitative case study of a
hospice-run community development model of palliative care. The project seeks to understand
the experiences of volunteers within a "Compassionate Community" scheme, in order to explore
how the wider goals of changing social attitudes towards death and dying can or are being
enacted. I aim to gain insight on the motivation of volunteers, understand what they see their
role in the scheme to be and where they see their responsibilities end. Through this I will
explore the impact and value of community development models of palliative care and their
ability to build social capital.
