The mental health and well-being of researchers in academia

Lead Research Organisation: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
Department Name: Division of Psychiatry

Abstract

Working as an assistant psychologist in my previous employment, I learnt to approach
sensitive subjects with great care in order to maximise the benefits of therapy for a range of
vulnerable individuals. The way in which mental health difficulties are perceived and tackled
within academic institutions has a significant impact on an individual's ability to readily
disclosure their concerns. Understanding the interplay between factors that influence the
well-being of academics-including the pressures incurred by pursuing such a career-is a
step toward enhancing productivity and improving the working environment.
