Settlement Change and Climatic Fluctuations in the East Anglian Breckland c.1000BC - 1600 AD

Lead Research Organisation: University of East Anglia
Department Name: History

Abstract

This PhD research project will focus on changing patterns of settlement and land use in the East Anglian Breckland in the longue durée and the extent to which these can be associated with climatic change. Can landscape developments in a 'marginal' environment be explained in terms of climatic fluctuation? And what might this tell us about the complexities of environmental change at different spatial scales? A diverse range of sources will be consulted, including archaeological material and documentary evidence as well as ecological and climatic data to provide as comprehensive analysis as possible.
