Studies of Layered and Chiral magnetic materials

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The studentship is to work on a variety of 2D Layered and Chiral Magnets some of which are known to exhibit either skyrmions or chiral solitons, as well as exploring new materials which have the potential to exhibit these properties. The project will make use of a number of experimental techniques to synthesize the materials in the form of crystals followed by investigation of the crystals produced through detailed studies of their structural and magnetic properties. Apart from the wide range of laboratory experiments at Warwick, there will also be scope for taking part in experiments at international facilities using neutrons, muons and synchrotron radiation, to complement our in-house studies. The project will be collaborative in nature and involve several research groups both within the UK and Internationally.
The University of Warwick is one of the five consortium universities in the UK National Research Programme on "Skyrmionics: From Magnetic Excitations to Functioning Low-Energy Devices", a Programme Grant funded by the EPSRC, UK, involving the universities of Durham, Oxford, Cambridge and Southampton. The student will have the opportunity to work with other students and PDRAs in the wider consortium, during the course of their PhD project
