Abstract
This topical project explores gender representation in the collecting, curatorial and educational practices of UK art galleries from the early twentieth century to today. Using Newcastle's Laing Art Gallery (founded 1906) as a central case study, it adopts a new-museological approach to uncover the gendered power relations inscribed in the gallery's archive, which continue to influence practice today. The project will propose new impactful models for the museum sector, and nuance our understanding of the role of regional galleries in promoting public knowledge of the relationship between art and gender.
