Experiencing Coal and Embodying Mineralogy: Science and Industry in South Yorkshire, c. 1760-1860

Abstract

This project will restore the historical agency of coal as a natural substance, and explore the practical, sensory and embodied relationship between coal and coalminers in
South Yorkshire during the industrial revolution. Insofar as historians of science have studied the scientific knowledge of industrial actors, they have focused on the Newtonian mechanics of natural philosophers and the technological innovation of industrialists. By focusing on the 'affective knowledge' of coal that miners possessed, this approach pays attention to a hitherto overlooked type of knowledge that contributed to the industrial revolution.
