Precarious Manhood in Malawi and the links to School Related Gender Based Violence

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sussex
Department Name: Sch of Global Studies

Abstract

My research will unpack the constructions of gender identities in Malawi and explore the
links with gender-based violence at secondary schools, and ask if school-related genderbased
violence (SRGBV) can be understood as a display of masculinity in this context. I will
use an ethnographic approach and qualitative tools including focus group discussions,
structured interviews, case study methodologies and media analysis to build an
understanding of how gender identities are constructed in Malawi, unpack the risk factors of
SRGBV, and use a systems thinking approach to show any dynamic relationships between
them.
