Market structure, innovation, and Britain's relative economic decline

Lead Research Organisation: Queen's University Belfast

Abstract

Kyle Richmond's research agenda is to investigate the link between market structure and innovation within the context of Britain's relative economic decline from the end of the Second World War to the 1970s, a period conventionally
known as the Golden Age of Capitalism. Richmond proposes to contribute novel historical patent data to gauge the level of innovative activity at both the industry-level and the firm-level in Britain over this period. This will permit an analysis of the dynamic link between market structure and innovation during a period of increasing industrial concentration in Britain, as well as an investigation into the role of innovation as a potential contributor to Britain's relative economic decline.
This research has the potential to contribute to both the historical narrative concerning Britain's poor post-war economic performance, as well as the larger debate in economics concerning the link between market structure and innovation.
