The Application of Advanced Measurement Techniques and Modelling of Material Plasticity to enhance ballistic toolmarks investigation

Lead Research Organisation: University of Huddersfield
Department Name: Sch of Computing and Engineering

Abstract

This project aims to take a key step towards ballistic correlation across material types of by investigating the effect that material composition plays in cartridge primer plastic deformation during firing. This will allow for a fully automated system which is able to model and compensate variables in material hproperties, thus increasing objectivity and creating a route into strengthening the evidential value of such comparison systems. This is important in cases where the same gun has fired cartridges of different material composition. The project will identify the role that material composition plays in primer topography variability and will provide the keystone to truly automated and objective ballistic correlation
