Quantum correlated probes for weak field sensing

Lead Research Organisation: The Open University
Department Name: Faculty of Sci, Tech, Eng & Maths (STEM)

Abstract

Cold atom quantum sensors are at present the most sensitive devices for measuring e.e. gravitational fields. Contemporary cold atom sensors obtain their precision by employing quantum super position as a resource, in a manner similar to that developed for atomic clocks, the precision of such sensors are ultimately limited by shot noise. One exciting prospect for improving upon these methods is to utilise quantum correlations, exotic quantum states such as the NOON stage are able to ofer precision that improves upon the shot noise limit.
