The Postatomic Ear: A practice-based study of sound and atmospheric effects in the Nuclear Age.

Lead Research Organisation: University of the Arts London
Department Name: London College of Communication

Abstract

As an atmospheric effect, sound continually moves, manipulates, excites, travels and interacts directly with other perceptible elements within our surroundings. At the inception of the Nuclear Age, the Trinity nuclear test brought this connection into focus with a detonation that produced a wave of sound, heat and radioactive fallout that tore across the deserts of New Mexico, USA. In the years subsequent to this moment, the Nuclear Age has continued to be defined by a narrative of thermal effects; within a generation, humankind oversaw a transition from the fear and suspicion of the 'Cold War' to apathy and deception in the face of a planetary crisis of global warming. While the thermal and the nuclear continue to be linked and perceived as an imminent threat, the audible has been widely ignored as an influencing factor within the societal framework of a postatomic world. With the proliferation of sound-based technologies associated with the nuclear, such as the use of ultrasound in radiography and surgical procedures and with new sonic weaponry and radar technologies, designed to interact, disrupt, sterilise and control, is it time to consider the social implications of a postatomic listening device? If so, what are the implications of this 'Postatomic Ear' and can focussing a sound arts practice on this concept, lead to a better understanding of how the audible can influence our perception of our environment?

Title 37°N
Description An online installation piece which engages a live audio-visual interjection in the streamed footage from the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daichi Nuclear Power Plant. This installation took place on the ten-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake, and the resulting tsunami that caused an explosion in one of the Fukushima plant's reactors in March 2021.

Title Geiger Counter Compositions
Description Composition by Geiger counter, for lunch making (2021) and Composition by Geiger counter, for washing machine (2021) are two short films that document the engagement of a Geiger counter as a sonic agent. The films represent an expansion of my workshop-based practice and are a record of an experimental approach that begins to blur the boundary between the site of my practice and the subject of my research, where radioactive data gathering, live audio manipulation, software design and documentation are activated as a tool for modulating the aural environment of my space of making.

Title Geiger Environs
Description Geiger Environs is film that observes the aural make-up of the workshop and its wider environment. The sounds of the workshop space, tools, fans, and occupants are presented in the context of their atmospheric conditions, the transit of cars on icy roads, the hum of heaters and fans, and sizzle of solder.

Title Writing for Window Boxes
Description Writing for Window Boxes (2020) is a practice experiment that began my exploration of the site in which I work. The work is a 4k digital film of approximately five and a half minutes in length, it was shot using a Sony A7SII camera, with combined audio from a Sennheiser MKE-600 shotgun microphone. The piece was filmed over the course of a full year and documents the activeness and influence of the external environments immediately connected to my workspace.

Description Remembering the Past in the Future: Building Awareness of Radioactive Waste Repositories Together
Form Of Engagement Activity A talk or presentation
Part Of Official Scheme? No
Geographic Reach International
Primary Audience Professional Practitioners
Results and Impact I presented my work and enagaged in the full weekend of activities that saw an extended debate on the future of nuclear materials gnereated by energy production.

The event was hosted at Tabloo in Dessel, a multi-functional visitor centre developed near the site of the future radioactive waste disposal facility for low and intermediate short-lived waste. Tabloo was developed by the Belgian National Agency for Radioactive Waste and enriched Fissile Material (ONDRAF/NIRAS) and local community partnerships, and serves as an example of a local approach for awareness preservation of a nuclear repository.

Participants heard from representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the European Commission, local partnerships in Belgium, and other relevant NEA groups such as the Regulators' Forum. Contributions from specialists outside of the nuclear field were included in the content of presentations and discussions to foster exchange of ideas and experience.

An optional site visit to the HADES Underground Research Laboratory was held on the last day of the workshop.
