Use of recycled concrete materials from nuclear decommissioning for nuclear waste management.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Materials Science and Engineering

Abstract

Cement production is currently the largest source of the industrial CO2 emission in the UK. World-widely, this industry generates ~10 % of man-made CO2. Recycling of waste concretes can offer a good solution to reduce the net CO2 emission from the cement industry, by directly reducing the use of new cements. The project investigates the application of the waste concrete materials for nuclear waste encapsulation. This will not only aid the sustainable use of cement but also provide a new source of materials for nuclear waste management.
