Advancing Magnetic Microscopy for Use in Biological Applications

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sussex
Department Name: Sch of Mathematical & Physical Sciences

Abstract

This research project aims to use Bose-Einstein Condensate Microscopy (BEC-M) to progress
biological research by imaging electric current pathways in nanostructure scaffolds used for
manipulating stem cell differentiation. It also aims to develop the BEC-M towards being able to
accommodate biological samples for example in order to study axonal transport through
magnetic nanoparticle vesicle labelling. The key challenge of this approach is making biological
samples compatible with the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment required by BEC-M. I
propose the use of a capillary tube system designed to withstand 2-bar pressure differences.
