Quantum networking with photonic graph states

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering and Physical Science

Abstract

This is a PhD research project in Physics. Quantum networks enable the distribution of entanglement between arbitrary sets of connected nodes for quantum communication, distributed quantum computing, and sensing. This project will focus on experimental demonstrations of quantum networking tasks using photonic graph states consisting of up to 8 entangled photons at telecom wavelengths. We will study a range of multi-party quantum communication scenarios, including conference key distribution, which allows simultaneous quantum key generation between multiple users; all-optical repeaters, which obviate the need for quantum memories by distributing redundant cluster fragments; novel forms of non-locality emerging in quantum networks; and the optimal routing of quantum information in networks. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the UK quantum technology hub for quantum communications.
