Technology adoption and skills development in Scottish manufacturing SMEs

Lead Research Organisation: University of Stirling
Department Name: Management, Work and Organisation

Abstract

The 1+3 year PhD studentship started with a Master of Research (MRes) degree in Business and Management. The MRes thesis studied the effects of new technologies on the operational HR role in the retail sector. The PhD research started in October, 2019. The overarching aim of the PhD research is to understand the role that skills development plays in technology adoption. The research will involve case studies in Scottish manufacturing SMEs that are in the process of new technology implementation - to identify technology adoption enablers in the organisations; and to understand the changes in work organisation, and consequently, skills requirements that new technologies might bring to the organisations.
