Screen Time: A multi-media arts practice investigation into how embodied experience can be evoked using mobile digital devices.

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Arts and Cultures

Abstract

This multi-media arts project will explore how meaningful, embodied experience can be produced on
handheld digital devices such as smart-phones. A range of moving-image artworks, from immersive
installations to portable devices, will be created to examine audiences' perceptual experience. Informed
by Expanded Cinema and philosophies of aesthetic slowness, the artworks will produce new modes of
viewing that question pervasive habits of attention, distraction or speed, produced by screen-based
devices encouraging alternative, creative, slow states such as meditation and daydream. This investigation
of slow digital embodiment will subsequently be used to ask whether ubiquitous screen-based technology
can better serve society.
