Paths to decolonising bio-cultural curation: new perspectives on the Economic Botany Collection at Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

The project focusses on specimens held by AC-NMW within the Department of National Science, Amgueddfa Cymru, National Museum Cardiff. As a public body, the museum has a well-being duty to meet the requirements of the Well-being of Future Generations Act (Wales) 2015. Through contributing to the work around decolonising museum collections and practice in Wales, the project responds to several well-being goals - including 'a globally responsible Wales'. The project will build connections with communities in India and Wales, drawing on existing and new cultural and museum-based partnerships between Wales and India, together with other international cultural institutions working on decolonising bio-cultural collections. The student will be working with the museum and local communities and as such will be working under the codes of ethics and conduct of Cardiff University and Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales. She has a supervisor in both institutions and a further staff member who has a role in supporting her in both places. As the museum is co-located with the university on the civic campus, the student will have ready access to staff at both sites. The researcher safety and ethics will be addressed in an ongoing way, in regular team meetings between all the parties.
