How successful was the UK government's volunteer mobilisation during the COVID pandemic?

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Economic, Social & Political Sci

Abstract

This project will explore the relationship between citizens and government when citizens are asked
by government during a time of crisis to undertake specific tasks (eg volunteer). It will contrast the responsiveness of citizens in acting for the public good when asked to do so by government, against being asked to act by, for example, charities or the media; it will also explore the willingness of the public to act spontaneously. Finally, it will consider under which circumstances citizens remain as engaged and committed volunteers after the crisis is over and what the nature and depth of that engagement is.
