Microrobots and Their Clinical Implant Applications

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Automatic Control and Systems Eng

Abstract

Ingestible microrobot is a biocompatible autonomous surgical robot which is used for in-vivo medical operations.
The challenge is how to develop such a functional robot that is safe and edible like a medicine and control it long-term for prolonged therapies.
This research aims to realize an ingestible robot that can autonomously monitor and treat a wound over prolonged time.
The project will first design an ingestible robot that can encapsulate an active patch and navigate it to the wound site.
Then we will develop supporting electronics for the actuation of the ingested robot for the prolonged therapy, such as local drug release and massaging for accelerated wound healing.
We will test the technology on benchtop platforms using advanced tissue phantom and on animal carcass.
