Abstract

project "How have inequities in health care access and care quality during the coronavirus pandemic exacerbated ethnic inequalities in health?"I am an epidemiologist and public health professional by training, with broad research
interests in the intersection of health, epidemiology, infectious diseases and policy. I am
interested in health inequities, social determinants of health and the roles race, ethnicity
and class play in determining health outcomes. My interest in this field of research has
stemmed from various master's level modules I have taken, which have introduced keys
concepts pertaining to social science, social determinants of health, social epidemiology and
its applications in the real world. Additionally, as a Black British female, with immigrant
parents, growing up in a working-class neighborhood in London, I have often observed
people in close proximity to myself experience poor health and multiple comorbidities. I
realized early on, that even within a country with a nationalized health care system such as
the UK, social class and social environment are inextricably linked with health status, due to
some of the downstream the effects of systematic racism, discrimination and exclusion. This
has often meant that ethnic minority groups, who have a higher likelihood of belonging to a
lower social class, often have had a disproportionate experience of high-risk living and
working conditions, lower access to high-quality health services, treatment and careincluding
lower access to safe, high-quality GP practices and hospitals and lower access to
treatment.
