Investigation of star formation in low-mass galaxies

Lead Research Organisation: Liverpool John Moores University
Department Name: Astrophysics Research Institute

Abstract

The star-formation-rate (SFR) - stellar-mass relation and galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) are
key galaxy population diagnostics. Measuring these accurately to low masses provides constraints on
the physics of star formation in, and the cosmological growth of, low-mass haloes. The SFR - mass
relation of star-forming galaxies populates a main sequence with SFRs of order stellar mass / age.
The project aims to probe star formation in low-mass galaxies and measure the cosmological SFR
density as a function of mass. This diagnostic will be compared with the latest cosmological
simulations. The observational data will come from existing imaging and spectroscopic survey data,
with a view to preparing for the 4MOST / WAVES survey.
