Bioengineering cancer niches to develop stem cells therapies

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: College of Medical, Veterinary, Life Sci

Abstract

Studentship strategic priority area: Stem Cell Science
Keywords: Mesenchymal, Hematopoietic, Leukemic, Hydrogels, 3D-model

In this project we aim to generate a comprehensive model that will mimic Leukaemia in the bone marrow. We will use the model to develop highly regenerative mesenchymal stem cells that can be used to repair the marrow after cancer to aid transplantation. Once established we will model hematopoietic stem cell (HSCs) transplantation along with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to identify if the persistence and regeneration of HSCs will be facilitated. Lastly, the interactions and secretory profile of MSCs that help HSC expansion will be investigated. In undertaking the work, omics technologies (metabolomics, transcriptomics) will be employed to understand cell interactions and bioinformatic pipelines developed.
