Applications of near-field optical spectroscopy for nano-photonic structures and devices

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The project will focus on nanoscale characterisation of nano-photonic structures and devices using near-field optical spectroscopy. So far, these nanoscale structures could only be probed with standard microscopy tools, providing only spatially-averaged information on a micron scale. Now, with the launch in Sheffield of our EPSRC funded state-of-the-art centre for near-field optical spectroscopy, we will achieve 10 nm resolution and absolutely new insights in the physics of nano-photonic structures and devices. A particular focus will be on using novel layered materials for fabrication of nano-photonic structures and devices, which will then be characterised by the novel state-of-the-art techniques.
