The photonic lattice gauge theory emulator

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering and Physical Science

Abstract

"

This is a PhD project in theoretical physics. The topological properties of strongly interacting quantum systems will be studied. The project falls under condensend matter physics but has also strong links to high energy physics because of the emergent gauge fields which will be studied. The project will involve a mix of numerical and analytical calculations, where a photonic lattice will be the physical system studied. A recently developed feedback mechanism for the photonic lattice will make it possible to induce arbitrarily strong nonlinearities, in addition to arbitraryly strong long range interactions. This will provide the key to the lattice gauge theory structure. During the phd project we will collaborate extensively with experimantal groups in IPAQS but also have close collaboration with several internationally leading research groups. "
