AI for fluid MIMO systems

Lead Research Organisation: University College London

Abstract

Fluid antenna system (FAS) translates enormous diversity in a small space into extraordinary capacity for wireless communications. This is enabled by software-controlled position-flexible antenna technologies. Results have demonstrated that in single-user scenarios, a single-
antenna FAS can outperform significantly a multi-antenna maximum ratio combining (MRC) system. FAS can also be used for multiple access, accommodating a large number of users if the number of ports is large. The proposed project aims to address the signal processing optimisation problems in FAS systems and extend the results of FAS to the case with more than one activated ports, giving rise to a fluid MIMO antenna system. Due to the large dimensionality in the number of ports, FAS cannot be optimised using traditional methods. AI techniques will be investigated to optimise fluid MIMO.
