Development of novel diagnostics for stroke

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: Warwick Medical School

Abstract

Novel biotechnology approaches can radically improve outcomes for patients through the development of minimally invasive, highly sensitive diagnostic tools that can readily be used at the point-of-care and in emergency situations. This academic/biotech collaborative project brings together research expertise in the biological response to stroke with manufacturing excellence in the development of biosensors. Utilising relevant models of stroke, the project will: identify biomarkers of stroke; develop and optimise technical solutions for the detection of these biomarkers, and, using these approaches, will chart the profile of release of the biomarkers after stroke. This project thus offers the successful candidate deep insight into the neurobiology of the brain and its response to stroke, training in experimental models of stroke, exposure to an advanced commercial biotechnology environment, and the prospect of identifying informative biomarkers and developing commercially viable diagnostic tools.
