Trauma and Transition in Women's Holocaust Art:

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Arts and Cultures

Abstract

Women's artistic responses produced during incarceration (1939-45) and after liberation.

Women's Holocaust art is surprisingly under-researched. Important gaps in
knowledge remain, alongside the need for rigorous examination and critique of
existing typologies.
My research will provide pioneering new analysis and comparison of the artworks
created by women during the Holocaust and after liberation. It will investigate
gendered representation through a new lens with specific focus on the role of art
in processing trauma and transition.
Unprecedentedly, it will analyse points of transition for these women, the
relationship of their artwork to their testimonies (including the role of idealised
testimonies) and their art in relation to gendered memory processing and
trauma.
