Establish conservation priorities for conifers in Northeast Mexico

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Geosciences

Abstract

The Northeast (NE) of Mexico is considered a diversification center for conifers and is currently home to thirty different conifer species. Being a region mostly dominated by arid conditions, climate change related pressures have increased the overall vulnerability of these species to future extinction events. National conservation actions are urgently needed to ensure that biodiversity is preserved, but with limited resources, what species and areas matter most? This project aims to identify conservation priorities for the temperate forests in NE Mexico using current distributions and risk assessments along with genetic information to analyse Phylogenetic Diversity of conifers across the landscape. Understanding how genetic resources are distributed would allow us to inform how to better allocate conservation resources to preserve important species and populations.
