Communities and Nature First: The Regenerative Tourism Future of the Galápagos

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Geography

Abstract

As the UN Decade of Ecological Restoration begins in 2021, there is a need to envision a tourism industry that is more
inclusive, equitable, and restorative, in which tourism is the tool that catalyzes positive social and ecological outcomes.
This studentship will explore the ways in which the Galápagos can transform into an SDG Territory by leading the
transformation of its tourism industry in the wake of COVID-19. This research will bridge academia and policy, ultimately
recommending strategic pathways for recovery grounded in robust evidence and stakeholder consensus.
