Abstract

The principal objective of this study is to examine class representations in Indian English Novels over a period of four decades from 1941 to 1991. It aims to explore if literature can become a means to understand the way class divisions formed a part of Indian subjectivity, and to further examine its formation. The threshold of this proposal is that over a period of last four decades and with the emergence of postcolonial studies, the considerations of class as an identity, and class representations in Indian literary criticism have been ignored while debates surrounding gender and race identities are given the status of the only legitimate concern.
