Monitoring and prediction of biodiversity loss with the use of artificial intelligence
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Birmingham
Department Name: Sch of Biosciences
Abstract
This project will build upon the lack of understanding of interlinked processes underpinning ecosystem services and biodiversity loss. It will use several datasets already available, including those from the University of Birmingham in DNA (biocomputing), climate change data from the Alan Turing Institute (climate change analysis) and a range of environmental and ecological data collected by the Environment Agency (forecasting with artificial intelligence). There will be several physical products created for the Environment Agency to use, these are referred to as emulators and they can be used to support climatic scenario forecasting and how these scenarios will negatively impact on biodiversity. There is also a major focus on knowledge exchange between the supervisory institutions and the Environment Agency with the ambition to train staff in the skills learned focusing on data science techniques.
