Stimulated Raman spectroscopy: instrumentation development to provide photonic analysis for environmental science

Abstract

The aim of this project is to build and evaluate a next generation stimulated Raman spectroscopy instrument. This technology is of interest to our collaborators Renishaw plc as it has potential to be disruptive and could be a basis for the next generation of spectroscopy equipment. To characterise this instrument and determine its commercial viability, it will be used to conduct analysis on a range of samples relevant to EPSRC target areas. These will include samples in two-dimensional materials, chemical systems, bio-physics and especially environmental science application areas. In all these cases, the new stimulated Raman spectrometer will serve as a tool to better understand the chemistry/material properties of the underlying systems allowing deeper scientific understanding, innovation and optimisation.
