Listening to Possibilities of Movement

Lead Research Organisation: Goldsmiths, University of London
Department Name: Computing Department

Abstract

Embodied knowledge is central to musical performance and pedagogy, yet it also has the potential to generate knowledge on the interrelation between movement, perception and agency in music itself. To explore these ideas, I will design an interactive music system that senses embodied movements of a performer. The digital component will reflect cognitive models of listening to engender its sonic response in real time. This research is interdisciplinary, combining music performance, composition and improvisation with computation and design. Methodologies encompass soma-based strategies, Research through Design, creative practice and empirical methods. This project will deepen current understandings of movement and sound in music performance, and contribute new tools and methods for instrumental pedagogy. Furthermore, creative output will demonstrate how we can work productively with digital technologies to enrich rather than replace existing culture in our societies.
