This Woman's Work: Women as Agents of Musical Circulation in Early Modern Europe

My research explores the role of women in the international transmission of musical culture in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, and particularly how relationships between women encouraged musical links between England and the continental mainland. How did women participate in the production and dissemination of music, and how did they act to promote or subvert their own musical heritage? How did the turbulent political situation of early modern England impact musical exchanges between women? Although an extensive body of existing scholarship has explored the contribution of female patronage to Western European music of this period, there has been little attention paid to women as participants in international music dialogues.
