From Genius to Scenius: Cultures of Collage in the Age of Digital Reproduction

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Arts and Cultures

Abstract

This creative practice research explores how technology and society shape the sharing of ideas
and notions of authorship and originality in a decentralised, networked community. Drawing
on Brian Eno's concept of 'scenius', it examines the changing landscape as collective
authorship and collaboration become more prevalent in the digital age, investigating how this
relates to older forms of cultural production grounded in copying and sharing.
Using collage as an expression of co-authorship and symbiosis while utilising preexisting
materials, I will make a series of audiovisual enquiries into these themes supplemented by a
podcast examining how they impact the creation of art.
