Finding the Voice of the Child Patient: The Stannington Children's Hospital, 1920-1980.

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of History, Classics and Archaeology

Abstract

The Stannington Sanatorium was England's first Tuberculosis Sanatorium specially designed for
children. Through an innovative amalgamation of oral history, visual culture studies, archival
research, and material culture analysis, this project recovers the voice of the child patient and
provides a new analysis of an important medical site. By focusing specifically on the child
patient, this project is a watershed moment in studying the voice of an often overlooked
category of patient. This case study approach illuminates the importance of place and space in
contemporary treatment and memory, with a unique focus on the voice of the child patient.
