New fast beam loss monitor system for Diamon-ll and machine learning applications

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

This Project aims to (1) commission a fast BLM system enabling slow and fast loss monitoring at Diamond in preparation for Diamond-II, and (2) explore ML applications using the new data available from the fast BLMs for fault detection.
Hardware is already available and partly deployed to equip 7 out of 24 cells in the storage ring. Software tools will be developed in spring 2023 by the Controls group at Diamond and would benefit from user testing. The archivers in operation at Diamond offer a stockpile of data for ML applications. A high spec server with significant compute power is available within the Diagnostics group.
In this Project the Student will gain:
hands-on experience of beam loss monitors incl. installation in the storage ring, calibration and operation
knowledge of general beam diagnostics through data analysis against other instruments on the storage ring and working with the archivers
skills in machine learning
