Quantification of oral bacteria metabolism for mathematical prediction of abiotic effects on kinetics and microbiome interactions

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

The oral cavity is the second largest microbial community in humans of which more than 700 bacterial species and undergoes continuous change due to environmental factors such as pH, oxygen and carbohydrate concentration. The metabolic interactions among the oral community are affected by the substrate consumption, pH and oxygen availability which help in the growth and inhibition of different species. The environmental conditions in the oral cavity and the metabolic interactions can lead to accumulation of different kind of bacteria in a plaque. The aim of this research is to develop a dynamic metabolic model considering the impact of abiotic factors like pH on kinetics of oral species. This will help to predict the interactions between different oral bacterial community and factors which can lead to the colonization of S.mutans using both experimental and in silico metabolic model,
